7 Tips for Picking Great Meat

If you like eating meat and feel better on a diet that includes some animal foods, that is totally OK. There is a whole army of vegan activists out there ready to convince you otherwise, so listen to your own body and make choices you can feel good about!

Sausage shopping in Norway… Moose, whale and reindeer is amongst the options

One thing we can all agree on is that we need to eat WAY more vegetables and that eating a diet rich in plants is a very good idea! I have dabbled in vegan, vegetarian and even raw food diets but found that for ME and my body, including some animal foods is best. Having said that, I’m not ignorant to the horrors of factory farming or the environmental impact of the food industry. I encourage you to always pick the best quality beef available and if it’s more expensive - just buy and eat less. Rather that than eating an animal that’s been fed a diet of corn and antibiotics and who lives a less than acceptable life. A happy animal leads to healthy, nutritious meat which means it’s also a nurturing food with strengthening energy for you.
A stir fry, stew or soup is a great way to feed a whole bunch of people from a small piece of meat.

My meat picking tips:

  • Join a CSA or Community Supported Agriculture. Check out Local Harvest for info on CSA’s in your area.
  • Or get it from your local farmers market. Talk to the farmer, get to know the farm where your food comes from.
  • Be informed. Check out Eat Wild!
  • When buying meat at the supermarket, look for organic, free-range (for chicken and eggs) and/or grass-fed
  • Make bone broth! Utilize all of the animal by making broth or soup from the bones of chicken, fish or beef. All the calcium and minerals from the bones are very strengthening. There’s a reason people swear by the chicken soup cure
    (and Campell’s Chicken Noodle doesn’t count ;)
  • Keep the portion of meat to the size of your palm or smaller
  • Eat a lot of vegetables (non-starchy ones in particular) with your meat for much better digestion. Meat and potatoes are not always the ideal combination… Try meat and kale!
